To begin editing, we first had to choose several sounds that would create the specific effect that we intended to portray in our film. We decided to go for a more ambient sound, as it could display the feeling of solitude and being completely isolated. Fortunately enough, we were able to locate and use several examples of ambient and foley sounds that we felt aided the film’s tone.
- Electric Lights (Ambient): We first had to decide on an ambient noise that would make the audience think that Dominick would be completely alone. We meddled with certain ambient audio such as fan whirring, fire burning, but none quite fit the shoe like electric lights. Being that the sound wasn’t too loud, it served as a rather unnoticeable noise while still exhilarating an eerie presence. The electric ambient noise continued throughout most of the film and only subsided once Dominick exited the house.
- Foley Sounds: While ambience contributed to the tone of the film, we still needed to incorporate ordinary foley sounds in order for certain parts of the film to make sense. For example, the final shot of the door used a foley sound of a light switch flicking off. Since the shot was taken outside of the house, there was no feasible way to hear the sound of the light switch. Thus, we incorporated the sounds of the light switch. We used the same principle for the sounds of the door opening and closing. This was done to create a sense of realism because without it, the movie wouldn’t make too much sense and the shots wouldn’t flow.
