Art of the Title

Mindhunter (2017):

  • What my group wishes to use from the Mindhunters title sequence is the still-shot of an object as the credits are played. In Mindhunters’ case exclusively, the record player is functioning as it would as the credits are being played on the screen in the corner. The focus is on the object and not the words, creates a minimalistic portrayal of the credits.
  • Another aspect of this frame is the lack of color used in the frame and throughout the entire Mindhunters’ introduction. This lack of color could be used to symbolize a grim tone that sets the stage for the rest of the movie. My group and I plan to incorporate these darker colors to create a sense of tension and gloominess in the viewer.
  • The lack of dialogue and overall human interaction is another aspect we wish to use in our introduction. The usage of the slow piano cover as the intro plays out seems to be of use to our introduction. Perhaps using a different song with the same premise. Lack of lyrics, and simply focuses on creating tension in the viewer.
  • The font of this introduction is very basic yet rather intriguing. Due to its simplicity and formality, it can be inferred that the show can have a more serious tone. This is a step away from the cheerful tone that my group and I are trying to avoid.
  • The final aspect my group wishes to incorporate in our intro is the poor use of lighting in the show. Everything portrayed on the screen is very poorly lit, and this is done on purpose to distribute a very grim tone.

Split (2017):

  • What my group wishes to take from this frame is the subtle yet significant changes to how the credits are introduced. While being rather bland, it is quite different from how most movies introduce the credits. The craziness of the intro depicts the actual theme of the movie which is mental instability.
  • Another aspect our group wishes to take from this frame is the lack of various colors. Similarly to Mindhunter, Split explores very dark and cryptic themes that have to do with the psychology and mental state of their characters. The lack of colors sets the tone for a more serious movie that isn’t meant to be taken light-heartedly.
  • While not being depicted, my group also wishes to incorporate the lack of sound present in the intro. In my opinion, no sound creates more tension in a viewer because it implores them to think about what is to come.

  • One aspect from this frame that my group and I can use in our introduction is the use of the close-up. Perhaps not on a character, but on an object. This close-up can pair nicely with the blurring of the rest of the scene, putting the focus on the object and not the entirety of the scene.
  • Another aspect of this intro that my group wishes to incorporate is the use of very grim colors. Similarly to that of Mindhunters, the lack of color can create a very grim and creepy tone which is what we are going for in our introduction.
