Reflection Question One

Transcript:

“Hello my name is Adrian Hernandez, my candidate number is 08, and our film challenges social norms and conventions by basically using an absence of sound, which is a very popular use in the film obviously, there’s a lot of sound a lot of dialogue. But our film wanted to step away from that for a little bit because we feel like dialogue, a lot of sounds, a lot of big booms, and a lot of funny dialogue could basically do all the feeling for the audience. A popular example of this would be a Quiet Place, which was directed by John Krasinski, a recent film, that has been praised a lot for its lack of sound. Basically what we feel that the lack of sound does is let the audience think more and let the audience feel more because once there’s a lack of sound, there’s no audio cues or dialogue cues that the audience can go to to feel so instead they’re relying on the visuals and themselves. So the lack of sound would give the audience time to process what they see, what they feel and basically give them a more emotional experience in the film. And it challenges or basically expresses social issues because with the absence of sound we don’t have to say what we feel, instead, we can show it. Much like the character, Dominick, in the film. He didn’t have to show us or say that he was scared, he didn’t have to say anything in fact. The heavy breathing, the slow walking, the steady pace can show that he was in fact fearful. Which can to us saying that we don’t have to say in order to feel, and our actions will speak louder than words.”
